Mile 187.7 (dispersed camping) to Derrick Knob Shelter

2 miles

Total miles 189.9

I took my time getting ready this morning. I didn't have far to hike. Taking a tent down in below freezing temperatures is not fun. The poles are so cold on bare hands. Brrr!

It was 21° last night. The wind was blowing and gusty so the wind chill was probably ri-donk-culous. At 3am I opened an 18 hour Hot Hands and placed it in the bottom of my sleeping bag. My feet were freezing. Thank goodness I had a couple left. I'm getting a lot of good use out of my 15° sleeping bag and liner.

I made it to the next shelter in good time. There was another steep uphill climb. I had fresh legs so it was fairly easy for me.

The weather never warmed up above freezing. I handwashed my pot washcloth. I placed it in the sun to dry. Instead it froze solid!

I met a delightful young woman named Jacqueline. We talked for a little while and I found a fellow Catholic on the trail. I usually don't tell my fellow hikers, but I recite the rosary in the morning during hiking. She does the same thing.

190 miles!

Frozen solid in the middle of the day.
